TRANSFORMERS: Revisiting the Characters of Generation 1 - DOUBLECROSS

TRANSFORMERS:  Revisiting the Characters of Generation 1

"Decepticon destruction is my favorite sport... and mine too!" - Doublecross, 1987.

AUTOBOT
Name - DOUBLECROSS
Function - Supply Procurer
Series Debut - 1987 / Wave 4
Sub-Group - Monsterbot

BACKGROUND...

Doublecross is a member of the Monsterbots, a trio of bizarre creatures that, despite the horrifying looks, work for the Autobots.  Doublecross transforms into a winged, two-headed, dragon-creature and acts as the Team's Supply Procurer.  So I guess when they need something - this is the guy that goes and gets it...?  Getting anything from a guy named "Doublecross" does not sound like a good idea in any situation!

His Tech-Spec explains that his two monster heads have separate minds and rarely agree.  If you make a deal with one, it isn't necessarily "binding" with the other.  My question is - "deals"???  Why is this guy striking deals?  Does this have anything to do with his procurement of supplies?  That's a bit sketchy!  Why would you strike a deal with a two-headed dragon with 2 different personalities in the first place???  Furthermore, what happens to the two personalities in robot mode?  He only has one head then.

Blaster"This energon tastes a little weird.  Where did you get this stuff?"

Doublecross:  "Don't ask!"

MY THOUGHTS...

The idea of freaky monsters working for the Autobots was an interesting one!  Three unruly beasts working for the "good guys" harkened back to the Dinobot's creation.  When the Dinobots were introduced, they were untamed and rebellious, but after some time, they settled down and found their place among their Autobot brethren.  I saw the Monsterbots as a cool opportunity to revisit that concept, maybe with a little more "crazy" on their side.  It never happened though as the Monsterbots never took any spotlight in the media, being overshadowed by the Headmasters and Targetmasters of the same year!

Doublecross was a cool character and had an interesting design, but I never bought him back in the day.  I don't think any of my friends picked up the Monsterbots either!  With no media focus on them at all, they just kind of faded into the background.  Looking back though, they certainly had a lot of unused potential!

Doublecross here is represented by the Titan Master figure - "Twinferno" released in 20??  Hasbro must have lost the rights to the Doublecross name.  He has a cool robot mode, but they creature mode is a bit blocky and could stand some improvements.

Monsterbots from the Series 4 catalog!
