TRANSFORMERS: Revisiting The Characters Of Generation 1 - HUN-GRRR
TRANSFORMERS: Revisiting the Characters of Generation 1
"Eat only what you need - destroy the rest." - Hun-Grrr, 1987.
DECEPTICON
Name - HUN-GRRR
Function - Terrorcon Leader
Series Debut - 1987 / Wave 4
Sub-Group - Terrorcon
BACKGROUND...
Hun-Grrr is a complete glutton! He spends most of his spare time gorging the two mouths of his beast mode. As a result, his orders are often misunderstood because his troops can't understand a word of the garbled mess he is saying. This all makes him an odd choice to be the Terrorcon Leader. Hun-Grrr will eat practically anything, although he's not a big fan of eating "live" things. He doesn't like the idea of his meal "wriggling" about in his stomach later. The digested materials in his stomach is able to be fashioned into projectiles for him to spit out at his enemies!
Unlike other two-headed Transformers, like Doublecross or Doubleheader, Hun-Grrr does not seem to have split-personalities between his 2 heads.
Like his fellow Terrorcons, Hun-Grrr transforms into a bizarre, nightmare-ish creature. His is similar to a large, two-headed dragon-like beast. Seeing his disturbing form enter the battlefield is certainly nightmare-fuel for the opposition.
As a robot he carries a sonic stun gun! Together with his Terrorcon brothers, they can merge into the giant robot - Abominus!
MY THOUGHTS...
There were a lot of figures I was on the fence on back in 1987... but not the Terrorcons! The idea of the Decepticons having these frightening, uncontrollable beasts on their side was perfect. Especially when paired up against the futuristic Technobot vehicles.
Hun-grrr was great! Although just as unruly as his teammates, I always imagined Hun-grrr was slightly more intelligent than the others to be entrusted to the team's leadership.
Looking at the color scheme... he is light gray, dark gray, and a purple/mauve-like color. Okay... this is a weird match-up. Yet, it works. I mean, the Terrorcons are quite unorthodox in many ways, so I guess the awkward coloring is quite fitting.
Hun-Grrr here is represented by the Power Of The Primes version of the figure. While this is a nice, updated figure, I probably still prefer the original. The reason why, is the original had slightly a bit more articulation in the twin heads. Also, I don't care for the way they cram all the Abominus parts into him. Just let some things get added on with spare parts. It's okay to do that occasionally. Also, I miss the giant rifle and shield he used to come with.
I do like this figure though. They captured the look of the robot and beast very well. I had no plans to get this figure, then I found him in a Collectables Store on the bottom shelf, in the back - for $15. All his accessories were there to boot. I don't know why. I couldn't pass that up!
Finally, I'd like to dedicate this write-up to Jason, Mike, Ron, and Scottie! The year of 1992 was unreal! Thanks for the memories!
Extra Special thanks to my son, Finn, who wanted to contribute to the blog, so he took these awesome photos of the figure!!
(Information on the character's lore was taken from the Sunbow Transformers cartoon series, including the Movie and the figure's original Tech-Spec.)
