TRANSFORMERS: Revisiting The Characters Of Generation 1 - REWIND

TRANSFORMERS:  Revisiting the Characters of Generation 1

"Too much information is never enough." - Rewind, 1986.

AUTOBOT
Name - REWIND
Function - Archivist
Series Debut - 1986 / Wave 3
Sub-Group - None

BACKGROUND...

If you were ever playing Team's in a game of Trivia Pursuit, Rewind is the guy you would want on your side.  Rewind serves as the Autobot's Archivist as he collects, stores, and maintains various kinds of data.  Unfortunately, many of his Autobot brothers feel the data stored is typically of no use to anyone.  All the information he carries causes him to have occasional "headaches".

Rewind utilizes an internal light-matrix to store his information.  This storage system of his is practically infinite.  He can even release some of this stored light-energy and become a blinding light-beacon.  In his robot mode, he carries 2 Adhesion Rifles.  These weapons fire a metal-bonding glue that is nearly unbreakable.

Rewind transforms into an 80's-style, Earthen cassette tape.  As such, he is often paired with the Autobot Communications Officer - Blaster, whom he can be stored in while in cassette mode.

MY THOUGHTS...

Back in 1985 when Blaster came out... I never understood WHY he didn't have any cassettes to go along with him.  Soundwave got 5 cassettes the same year he was released!  In fact, I figured Blaster's tape deck didn't even open.  What are you going to do... put Decepticon cassettes in him???  Then I got him and found out his deck DID open.  Okay, this doesn't make sense...

Thankfully, in 1986, Blaster got a group of his own to work with - Ramhorn, Eject, Steeljaw, and Rewind.  While I thought all 4 looked top-notch, I thought it was a little silly to give the robots, Eject and Rewind, names of cassette deck commands.  I half expected them to release a couple more!  You could name them "Pause" and "Record".  Anyways...

Rewind had a great look.  He has a good color scheme and a cool head sculpt.  I also liked his original chromed rifles.  As far as play would go, he had a cool unique ability with the bright light he can release (personally, I think this is where they should have pulled his name from).  II would have been nice if they would have put him out in 1985 and he could have gotten some media-time with the better Season 2 cartoons and not the bizarre Season 3 series!

Standing in for the original G1 Rewind, is Rewind from the Combiner Wars series.  Other than the blocky hands and the missing chrome rifles, this is a good update of the figure!  The data pad mode is a little weird, but I guess it makes more sense than him being an outdated cassette.

G1 Autobot cassettes from the Series 3 catalog!

(Information on the character's lore was taken from the Sunbow Transformers cartoon series, including the Movie and the figure's original Tech-Spec.)
